Are you doing any gardening this weekend?

The sun is trying to get out today, and if you’re anything like me, you start thinking about a bit of gardening, or trip to the garden centre!

There are so many toxic plants (and foods) out there, but here is one to look out for...

It’s called Sago Palm

It’s a popular uk plant, my mum used to have one in her house - before I told her it was dangerous - although decorative, this plant is in fact severely toxic to dogs.

It is a large ornamental garden or conservatory plant, it can also be found as a house 'bonsi' plant.

All parts of the plant contain a chemical called cycasin, which when eaten, causes severe liver damage.

Damage to the liver can appear as anything from mild vomiting, through to lethargy, jaundice, seizures and even death.

If you have this plant, and you notice any unusual signs in your dog, phone your vet and tell them.

Signs to watch out for:

- Drooling

- Vomiting

- Diarrhoea

- Loss of appetite

- Drinking more

- Weakness

- Lethargy

- Black faeces

- Seizures

Signs can develop anytime from 15 minutes through to 3 days.

If you have this plant at home, it is advisable to keep your dog away from it, or maybe even remove the plant from your house/garden.

If you are concerned that your dog may have chewed or eaten any part of this plant, or any plant, then contact me, or my team, or your own vet, and get advice. Take a photo of the plant that has been eaten, and find out it’s name if you can.

The sooner treatment can be started then the greater the chance of a good outcome, although there is a significant risk of death if this plant is eaten.

Safe gardening! 💕👩🏼‍⚕️🐾
